Spain Became The Most Successful Team In Euro With A Record 4th Championship Record
Spain made history by defeating England 2-1 in the Euro 2024 final, becoming the first team to win four titles. Their previous victories were in 1964, 2008, and 2012. Germany follows with three titles. England faced disappointment for the second consecutive time, being the first team to lose back-to-back Euros finals.
In a thrilling final at Berlin’s Olympiastadion, Mikel Oyarzabal’s late goal secured Spain’s victory just before extra time. Despite the majority of the crowd supporting England, Spain dominated with 66% ball possession and 16 shots on target against a resilient English side.
Nico Williams scored first for Spain, assisted by Lamine Yamal, but Cole Palmer equalized for England. In the 86th minute, Oyarzabal and Marc Cucurella combined to give Spain the lead.
Spain controlled the game throughout, with England struggling to keep up in the first half. Phil Foden had England’s first shot on target, easily saved by Unai Simon.
Despite losing Rodri to injury, Spain quickly regrouped and took the lead just before halftime. England, known for comebacks, now had to overturn the score once again.
The loss of Rodri did not deter Spain, as their wingers Yamal and Williams combined for the opening goal. England had to rally from behind, a situation they had successfully navigated in previous knockout matches.
Southgate substituted Kane for Watkins at the 60-minute mark, a move that had previously worked in the semi-final against the Netherlands.
Despite Spain having opportunities to score more goals, their fans cheered every successful pass with an ‘ole’. Southgate tried to change the game by bringing on Palmer for Mainoo.
England quickly equalized within three minutes as Saka crossed from the right, Bellingham passed to Palmer, who scored with a low shot into the corner.
However, Spain secured the victory with a goal four minutes before the end, thanks to their substitute.
Oyarzabal passed to Cucurella on the left, then moved into the middle to score from his teammate’s cross, just staying onside.
Spain managed to hold on, with Olmo making a crucial goal-line clearance to stop Guehi at the last moment.
